Indonesia morally obliged to assist Myanmar: Monk Activists

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Fri, 05/23/2008 7:33 PM | National

As one of the world’s largest democracies, Indonesia should step up its role in alleviating Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis, Myanmar activists told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

“Indonesia, being one of the greatest democracies, should help in ensuring the provision of basic rights of Burmese people, “ said Ashin Nayaka of the International Burmese Monks Organization.

Cyclone Nargis, a cyclone devastating Myanmar earlier this month, had further exacerbated the plight of the Burmese, who have been living under ruthless military tyranny, he added.

“Our sources in Burma say at least 70 to 75 percent of the cyclone’s survivors have yet to gain access to government and international agencies’ aid,” said former political prisoner Myo Thein, who is currently based in the United Kingdom.

“In fact, the aids sent in so far are either kept in a storage or sold by the government in the markets; we have pictures to prove that,” he added.

The activists also expressed their disappointment over a perceived lack of interest from Indonesia on the Myanmar question.

“We are disappointed that as a non-permanent United Nations Security Council member, Indonesia had expressed its reservations on a possible Council-sanctioned humanitarian intervention in Myanmar, Myo Thein said. (amr)
